An Historic Event: The US Federal Court Ruled Against the Islamic Regime in Iran September 30, 2007 MEHR Iran that was instrumental in filing a lawsuit against the Islamic Regime of Iran in 2003 is delighted to announce that on 9/28/2007 Judge John Bates made a judgment in favor of plaintiff, Hossein Nikbin, against Islamic Regime of Iran, Iranian Ministry of Intelligence and Security, and Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Monetary damages was awarded to Mr. Nikbin.
This is an historic event. It is the first time that a ruling regime is held liable for torture.

Background:
The lawsuit charged that agents of the Islamic Regime of Iran tortured the plaintiff, Gholam Nikbin, 56, who served three years in jail for his conversion to the Mormon faith and for permitting dancing at his wedding. Nikbin was whipped with an electric cable on his bare soles, flogged with a leather whip and hung upside-down during interrogation and punishment by Iran's security forces in the mid-1990s. The torture damaged his kidneys and made walking difficult. The case was finally tried at the Federal Court of the UnitedState on February 2, 2007. Dr. Pepper and three other trial lawyers presented the case and three witnesses testified on behalf of plaintiff. Dr. Parvin, the founding Director of MEHR testified as expert witness on human rights violation in Iran as well as the power structure of the Islamic regime in Iran. Judge Bates didn’t order punitive damages against the regime and its agencies. Amidst its international, its continuing support of terrorism, its ongoing nuclear adventurism, its involvement in the destabilization of Iraq Afghanistan and Lebanon through proxy groups and its repeated calls for the destruction of a sovreign foreign state, the IRI has not lost sight of what it rightly considers as the most imminent and present danger to its existence: the people of Iran and their increasingly united dissidents.
On september 12, IRI security services have cracked down on Human Rights activists in the cities of Tehran, Karaj, Eslam-Shahr, Sanandaj, and Firooz-Kooh. Among the emprisonned freedom fighters are: Abbas Khorsandi, Meysam Roodaki, Bahram Rasekhifar, Sepideh Pooraghaii (journalist), Mansoor Faraji and Qasem Shirzadian (blogger).
At least some have been transferred to the infamous �209 section� at the Evin prison in northern Tehran.
The case is the latest among an ongoing series of arbitrary arrests hitting journalists, bloggers, and other prisoners of conscience charged with �undermining national security�, regardless of the most basic principles of justice and the presumption of innocence. Deeply concerned, we call upon the European Union and all competent international institutions to increase their pressure on the IRI authorities in Tehran, asking for the immediate release of all political prisoners in Iran.

Within fifty three days there have been seventy nine executions in Iran. Twenty seven of those were public hangings. Twelve of those broadcasted on the Iranian TV and Haleh Esfandiari comes on the U.S. TV and tells us how polite and friendly the regime has been to her! Is she the ambassador of Iran's PR group now or she simply can’t care less to discuss prisoners, hangings, human abuses, and women's conditions in Iran.
International Appeal for
a Worldwide Moratorium
on the
Death Penalty
For World Day Against the Death Penalty 2007, the World Coalition is launching an Appeal for a worldwide moratorium on executions. Following the five million people who signed the ‘Moratorium 2000’ petition launched by the Community of Sant’Egidio and Amnesty International, the petition invites all governments to work for a world free of executions and call upon the member states of the UN General Assembly to overwhelmingly vote in favor of an international moratorium on executions.
